This position will travel up to 25% of the time throughout the State of California.This position is headquartered in Sacramento and may be eligible for a hybri d telework schedule for applicants residing in California, in accordance with Government Code Section 14200 and the Department’s current telework policy. A hybrid schedule typically includes working remotely and physically reporting to the office a minimum of two days per week; however, the specific number of in-office days and the overall telework schedule are subject to change at the sole discretion of the Department based on operational needs, policy changes, or direction from State leadership. Employees may be required to report to their designated work location with minimal notice. Telework does not alter the terms and conditions of employment, essential job functions, or compliance with departmental policies.
Effective July 1, 2025, The California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.
Under the general direction of the Chief of Communications & External Affairs (CEA A), the Information Officer II serves as the department’s lead communications strategist and supervisor, responsible for planning, developing, and directing internal and external communications activities. The incumbent oversees the creation and dissemination of high-quality written, visual, and digital content; supervises staff performing communications, photography, videography, and social media functions; and ensures consistent, accurate, and timely messaging that supports Energy Safety’s mission and statutory responsibilities.
The Information Officer II provides expert-level guidance on media relations, public information, digital engagement, and crisis communications; develops communication policies and procedures; and ensures compliance with state requirements, accessibility standards, and departmental branding. The position manages complex, sensitive, and high-profile communication projects requiring substantial judgment, political awareness, and coordination with executive leadership, program divisions, external partners, and the public.

Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
