Job Description

The Junior Cloud Engineer position is a great opportunity for an early-career IT professional to grow their cloud skills while supporting the unique needs of our public sector clients. You’ll help deploy and operate a secure, modern AWS-based platform, learn strong operational practices, and work alongside experienced engineers in a collaborative environment. This role is hands-on and is a strong fit for someone who enjoys learning, problem-solving, and building reliable systems.

Your challenges and objectives:

  • Learn Avature’s infrastructure, operational processes, and compliance requirements within public sector environments.
  • Support AWS infrastructure across production and development environments, with an emphasis on security, reliability, and repeatable deployments.
  • Utilize Infrastructure as Code and configuration management through mentorship and real-world projects.
  • Contribute to projects end-to-end: gathering requirements, implementing changes, validating outcomes, documenting work, and supporting handoff to operations.
  • Partner with teammates and stakeholders to understand needs, communicate progress, and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Collaborate with global colleagues in a diverse, interconnected working environment.

Your day-to-day activities:

  • Operate and support AWS-hosted infrastructure and services, working primarily in Linux environments.
  • Administer Linux systems: user/service management, patching, hardening, troubleshooting, performance analysis, and automation.
  • Build and maintain Terraform modules and workflows to provision and manage cloud resources safely and repeatedly.
  • Implement and maintain configuration management using Puppet to ensure consistent system state and reduce drift.
  • Support troubleshooting of cloud and system issues, helping with root cause analysis and learning to implement preventative improvements.
  • Participate in platform improvements and operational maturity efforts (runbooks, standards, change implementation, automation, and resilience improvements).
  • Participate in an on-call rotation after onboarding/training, with clear escalation paths and team support.
  • Support adoption of new tools and technologies to meet evolving public sector and compliance requirements.

About you:

  • US government security clearance eligibility is required. Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain a US government security clearance.
  • Have 1–2 years of experience in a cloud operations/infrastructure role supporting production or production-adjacent environments.
  • Experience deploying, operating, and troubleshooting core AWS services.
  • Experience with Linux as an everyday operating system (preferred), as well as experience with Linux system administration (required).
  • Have hands-on experience using Terraform to provision and change infrastructure (following version control and basic change/review practices).
  • Familiar with or actively using configuration management like Puppet (or ready to ramp quickly with prior exposure).
  • Ability to complete complex projects from beginning to end with minimal supervision (planning, execution, and operationalization).
  • Comfortable working in technically complex, process-driven environments where documentation and change control matter.
  • Experience with specific technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes is a plus.
  • Experience or strong interest in programming and automation, with a focus on creating efficient and streamlined processes, and a desire to eliminate repetitive tasks.
  • Able to deliver end-to-end infrastructure work in technically complex, process-driven environments where documentation and change control matter.
  • Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills, able to break down ambiguous problems, prioritize hypotheses, and resolve issues under pressure.
  • Willingness to work within business hours in the EST time zone.
