Job Description and Duties

The Medical Transcriber will be directed by the Senior Medical Transcriber in the Health Information Management Department (HIMD) at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Transcribing dictation generated through the hospital’s central dictation system
• Reports to be transcribed frequently contain offensive language and sexually graphic material
• Transcribed reports are to reflect knowledge of English mechanics including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence construction
• Utilizing appropriate resources and reference materials to proofread transcribed reports for dictation inconsistencies, discrepancies, or inaccuracies
• When indicated, dictation must be appropriately edited, revised, and/or clarified without altering the meaning of the dictation or changing the dictator’s style

Working Conditions

This position is eligible for telework (all workdays at an approved alternate work location) after successfully passing probation. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the department and is subject to change as business needs arise.

Special Requirements

• The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.
• The position(s) require(s) Medical Clearance prior to being hired.

Candidates must submit a valid typing certificate with a minimum speed of 45  NET Words Per Minute (WPM) that meets . Typing tests for certification must be 5 minutes in length and proctored either virtually or in person. Candidates that are current State employees in a typing classification do not need to submit a typing certificate.

  • Candidates who believe they meet the Minimum Qualifications (MQs) based on a pattern of education, as outlined in the classification description (specifications), must submit a copy of their unofficial college transcripts with their application (STD. 678).
    • Transcripts must include candidate's name, the name of the school, and the date the degree was conferred, if applicable, in order to be considered for this position.
    • Foreign transcripts must include verification for US equivalency from an independent company.
    • Please ensure that the birthdate and social security number are redacted from the transcripts.
